Artist’s Statement

I’ve recently retired from careers in graphic arts and computer applications and now practice my art full-time. I’ve been actively producing work and exhibiting in juried shows for the last twenty years, mostly in the St. Louis area. I’ve worked in painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and fiber.

My practice reflects my preoccupation with patterns in nature, culture, and mathematics. The structure of patterns gives me the opportunity to explore the gray area between symmetry and randomness. I usually use personal rules of constraint to guide compositional decisions.

I’m attracted to a variety of media and techniques for practical reasons, rather than how familiar I am with their use. I choose whatever materials solve the formal problems I pose, and determine a process to carry out the work. No matter how much time I put into the planning stages, the result is always unexpected.
